August 1–7 — Week 1 Research Notes
The first week of the 120 Miles in August experiment is complete with 16.45 total miles logged.
The biggest takeaway so far is soreness. My legs are definitely feeling the increased workload, but the bigger issue has been persistent tightness through my back. It hasn’t stopped me from getting the miles in, but it has been noticeable enough that it needs to become part of the experiment moving forward.
Recovery needs more attention. I have been focused heavily on completing the mileage, but not nearly enough on the work that allows me to keep completing the mileage. Stretching and mobility need to become a daily priority, particularly for my back, hips, hamstrings, and overall posterior chain.
So far, the experiment feels manageable, but 16.45 miles is only the beginning. The goal for Week 2 is not simply to add more miles. It is to figure out how to keep the body loose enough and recovered enough to continue stacking miles without allowing normal soreness and tightness to become something that derails the experiment.
Week 1 mileage: 16.45 / 120 miles
Progress: 13.7% complete
Primary observation: Increased soreness and back tightness
Adjustment going forward: More consistent stretching, mobility, and recovery work
